Surf-Foil appeared in the 2000s. Among the pioneers are big names such as Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Paolo Rista. Originally, it was just a way to fly over the water in a surf-towed way, in large waves of swell. In 2016, it was Kai Lenny who made the number of practitioners explode. The discipline immediately conquered surfers from Hawaii, Australia, California and Brazil. The level is skyrocketing. Gradually, surf foil arrives in Europe, and in France. The advantages of Foil are to multiply the number of possible sessions, practicable spots, and offer new sensations. In this article, we will explain how a surf foil works with its different parts and we will detail the importance of the characteristics of the front wing.

This article explains how a Foil works for the following sports: Surf Foil , SUP Foil, Downwind SUP Foil and Tow-in Foil .

Composition of a Surf Foil

The foil is composed of the following components : mast, fuselage, front wing and rear wing (stabilizer).

The mast is attached perpendicular to the plank and fuselage. Thus, the wings are parallel to the board. In this way, it is possible to act on the foil by simply pressing the feet.

The front fin has a domed upper part (upper surface) and a flatter lower part (lower surface). The front wing has a rounded leading edge that quickly builds thickness and then tapers to a thinner trailing edge. The width of the front wing (the width from the center of the leading edge to the center of the trailing edge) is called “the chord” and the length (the right/left end) of the front wing is called “the chord”.

Finally, the stabilizer has a shape quite similar to that of the front wing, with equivalent properties. However, it has a small surface area and a different profile.

Tutoriel Sroka Company expliquant le fonctionnement d'un Foil

Principles of operation of a foil

The working principle of a surf foil is based on fluid dynamics. The front wing is pulled upwards as it moves forward, because the water molecules that pass over the upper surface of the front wing accelerate to catch up with the water molecules passed over the lower surface (which is shorter because it is flat). The acceleration of the molecules on the upper part of the wing creates a depression and the slowing down of those on the lower part creates overpressure. The consequence is an upward suction effect. The higher the speed of the foil, the more the foil is “pulled” upwards (at the same profile and angle).

We can easily compare the operation of a foil to that of an airplane which takes on more or less the same shape if we forget the mast and the board. Movement speed grows lift and allows take-off. The difference in angle given to the wings of an airplane Stabilizes in the air. LA decrease in the speed of movement allows you to reduce lift and therefore to land an aircraft (at a constant angle of incidence). Finally, to change the angles of incidence of the foil, the rider can by alternating pressure on the front or rear foot make the foil or the stability go up or down. It’s all about the amount of pressure on the supports.

To take off, the speed must be high enough to create lift force on the front wing. Combined with a high angle of incidence (thanks to pressure on the back foot) the board takes off. To stabilize the situation, pressure on the front leg reduces the angle of incidence, and therefore the lift, and accelerates.

Swell as a source of energy

If the aircraft uses the suction force of air molecules, the foil solicits the suction of water molecules that have a much higher density than those of air. This density will increase the lift (the upward suction effect) of the foil with speed.

In this article, we are talking about Surf Foil and the use of water movements (waves, swells, troughs, boat wakes) to fly. In contrast to wind, which allows the use of a constant force external to the water in kite or windfoil, the water movements of waves such as waves are variable forces with precisely localized lift zones on the water.

It is therefore a question for the Surf Foil practitioner to leave lying on the board with the foil underneath and to paddle to catch a wave (in SUP Foil you go directly standing up and you paddle with the paddle to catch the wave). Once on the wave, the accumulation of speed generated by the slope of the wave allows the wave to take off.

HOW THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FOIL VARY

When it comes to fluid dynamics, every detail or change made to the foil matters and affects its characteristics. We looked at 4 major characteristics of a Surf Foil to explain what parameters influence them (There are many others but we won’t cover them in this article).

Lift

The lift of the foil, or the upward suction effect, varies mainly according to the size of the front wing, its thickness, its airfoil shape and the angle of incidence of the wing. The larger the surface area of a wing with the thickness, the more lift it generates. The higher the angle of incidence, the more lift it generates but slows down the foil. On the other hand, the lower these parameters, the lower the lift. With equal surfaces, angles and thicknesses, two different profiles will result in different lifts and speeds. The surface area as the only reference parameter is not enough to determine whether a foil carries a lot or not.

Indeed, the specificities of the front wing profile will play on the overall lift of the foil. This can be the upper curve of the upper surface or the lateral curve, i.e. the one that goes from side to side lengthwise.

Finally, other external elements play on the general lift of the Foil such as the weight of the rider, the weight and size of the board or of course the power of the waves.

Speed

In addition to the lift of the foil, the speed of the foil depends on the surface area and the angle of incidence of the front wing. A front wing with a small surface area and/or little thickness will offer more speed, and a front wing with less angle of incidence will also be faster.

Then, the specificities of the shape of the wing for the same surface play on the speed of the foil. A wing with less chord and therefore more wingspan will be faster. In addition, the profile of the wing (parameters mentioned above) has a great influence on speed and acceleration ability.

Finally, as mentioned above: the weight of the rider, the size and weight of the board but also the power and speed of the swell are external factors that strongly condition the speed of the foil.

Stability

A relatively slow foil with a lot of lift (i.e. large surface area, wing thickness and a bit of angle of incidence) will be more stable than a foil with less weight and a faster one.

The main elements that allow the foil to gain stability are the length (chord) of the front wing, its thickness and the surface area and wingspan of the rear wing, also known as the stabilizer.

The rear wing (stabilizer) plays its full role in stabilizing the foil. Its lift is inverse to that of the front wing and thus makes it possible to slightly counteract the lift of the front wing by creating opposing forces to stabilize the entire foil.

The external factors influencing the stability of the Foil are necessarily the weight of the rider and his technical skills but also the type of body of water on which Surf Foil is practiced. A rough body of water with currents, backwashes and waves will be more unstable because these elements disturb the depressions and overpressures that generate the pull of the foil upwards (like an aerial disturbance when you are in a plane).

Manoeuvrability

If a foil with little lift (i.e. little surface area, angle of incidence and thickness) is faster and indirectly more manoeuvrable, this is not the only parameter that affects its manoeuvrability.

The main element concerning the manoeuvrability remains the shape of the front wing, namely the lateral curve, which accentuated makes it easier to turn with the foil. A high lateral curve will result in a more manoeuvrable but slower foil because for the same lift surface (shadow cast on the ground) the total surface area will be larger and will brake. On the other hand, a flatter side curve will rotate less but will be faster.

IN SHORT

The general shape and dimensions of the foil vary these four characteristics:

  • The bigger a wing is, the thicker with the angle of incidence = the more it carries and the slower it goes
  • The smaller a wing is, with little thickness, angle and chord in relation to its wingspan = the faster it is
  • The larger and thicker a kite is with chord length = the more stable it is
  • The smaller a kite, the thicker it is with curve = the more manoeuvrable it is

OUR S-FOIL DEVELOPMENT CHOICES

When we developed our S-Foil, we sought over several months of R&D and testing to achieve the best compromise in terms of accessibility, versatility and performance.

Accessibility

Our vision is to democratize board sports, both by offering products that are easy to learn and progress and by their affordable price on the market while having excellent overall performance. We have particularly worked on our S-Foil with an easy, error-tolerant and stable wing profile to accompany each rider as easily as possible.

To achieve this, we have increased the surface area, chord, wingspan and thickness of the front wing compared to our previous models to gain lift and stability. We’ve also reworked the stabilizer by adding surface area, side curve and a better surface thickness curve to maximize glide.

Versatility

Faced with the influx of equipment that can be found nowadays, the choice of versatility was a natural one. Versatility in terms of type of practice (Wake, Wing, Surf, Kite, etc.) but also in terms of conditions (wide wind ranges and all types of waves).

It is by soliciting our athletes and combining our R&D efforts that we were able to test our S-Foil surf foil for more than 6 practices in very different conditions with users who do not have the same size. With 4 interchangeable front wing sizes (M 1250, L 1500, XL 1750 and XXL 2000) we have developed a hyper versatile foil that adapts: to the practice and the conditions but also to the size and level of each one.

Performance

While the choice of accessibility and versatility does not always go in the direction of performance, we have worked on the profile of our wings on the details that make the difference in order to obtain exceptional performance qualities for each size of front wing.

To gain speed and manoeuvrability , we have chosen fast, efficient and very stable profiles and we have paid attention to all the details to reduce drag and friction by refining the trailing edges and moving the master handsome back.We twisted the curvature profile of our wings to gain both stability and speed. Finally, we have validated our different sizes (surfaces) of front wings to gain speed and performance as soon as the conditions of practice and the level of each user allow us to switch to a smaller size.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE BOARD ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE FOIL

Length

The length of the board will influence your surf foil practice in two ways. A longer board with volume makes it easier to catch the waves to take off. However, a long board decreases the lift of the foil once in the air compared to a short board because of the extra weight at the front.

Width

The width of the board can, as well as the length, make it easier to catch waves when paddling for take-off. On the other hand, once in flight, the rails of a board that is too wide may touch the surface of the water in turns and slow down the rider.

Weight & Volume

The weight of the board has a negative impact on the lift of the board. The heavier the board, the more the lift of the foil will be countered (opposing force). On the other hand, a gain in volume makes it easier to get off to the waves.

Shape

We can rightly imagine that the shape of the board doesn’t matter once in the air, but several details help to improve the flying experience: the rocker at the front and the bevel at the back and sides so that you don’t touch the water once in flight. In addition, other parameters such as the rounded shape of the nose and the concave on deck and under the hull make it possible to gain in paddling comfort and to be more efficient in catching waves.

OUR CHOICES OF SURFBOARDS/SUP FOIL

Fast Flyer Foil Surfboard

Our Fast Flyer foil surfboard is designed to allow an easy and efficient practice of Surf Foil. We opted for comfortable dimensions of 4’6 (140cm) long by 21″ (55cm) wide. With a rounded nose, and a compact overall volume, it is the perfect compromise to learn, progress and perform in all conditions.

To make paddling easier, we’ve slightly hollowed out the deck for more comfort with a progressive rocker on the nose. We worked the hull with a double concave to maximize the glide at low speeds in order to set off on waves that have not yet broken. The entire deck of the board is lined with pads for comfort and durability. Once in flight, the beveled rails and cut tail ensure that the surface is not touched when turning and when the user is pumping. Its short length allows it to be very responsive and stable in curves, in addition to reducing inertia when pumping. For those who want to

Don’t have the right conditions to surf? Surf Foil is a water sport that will multiply your riding possibilities. Whatever the wave conditions, you will be able to have fun on an infinite number of spots. The practice of Surf-Foiling has exploded in recent years, and we understand why.

This water sport consists of lying down on a board with a foil, rowing and catching a wave, just like in surfing. Once on the wave, the speed generated by your foil will allow you to take off and fly over the water. Close your eyes and imagine yourself skiing or snowboarding on a 1m of powder! Feeling like a bird is the feeling of softness you will have.

Why take up Surf-Foil?

First of all, this sport has the undeniable advantage of allowing you to experience surfing when the waves are soft and do not break. It allows you to optimize low wave conditions, for example in summer when there is less swell and you can quickly get bored surfing on overcrowded spots. Surf-Foil is also a way to distance yourself from the surfers on the line-up. You can go and enjoy the spots with fewer people, and sail freely, without constraints. The other undeniable advantage compared to traditional surfing is that the Surf-Foil allows you to multiply the number of waves caught during a session. Check out this pumping video.

Indeed, it is possible to chain waves, accelerate, fly on soft areas, return to the peak with ease. A well-controlled pumping can make you go up and string together more than 6 waves in a row! This makes everything simpler and smoother. In your evolution you will find that Surf Foil is just as sporty a practice as surfing and turns out to be very interesting for cardio. It is also the stage to go downwind (in SurfFoil or SUPfoil) or in towed surfing with a foil.

How to choose the right SurfFoil pack?

Do you dream of surfing the swell, varying the playgrounds, far from the crowded waves? At SROKA Company, freeride surf-foil is one of our passions. Our goal is to share it with you, thanks to material that we enjoy developing and using ourselves, without being overpriced, through this article.

All our answers to the questions you may have when choosing your Foil!

How does a Foil work?

The operation of a foil is similar to that of an underwater plane thanks to fluid dynamics. The speed of movement generates a lift force and allows you to take off. Indeed, a lift force is created on the front wing and allows the foil to take off. The higher the speed of the foil, the more the foil is “pulled” upwards. This is when you need to put more pressure on the front leg (or decrease the size of the front fin). The rear wing acts as a stabilizer and balances the lift of the front wing in a way. Your weight acts as a balancing act between these two fins.

To find out everything about how a foil works, check out our article “How does a surf foil work?“.

Composition of a Surf Foil

The Foil is composed of a mast, attached perpendicular to the board and fuselage and two front and rear wings. The largest wing with a domed upper part is at the front, whose leading edge is rounded and quickly thickens, then tapered towards a thinner trailing edge. Finally, at the rear, there is the stabilizer, whose shape is similar to that of the front wing but inverted, with a reduced surface area and a different profile. The size of the stabilizer will determine the maneuverability and speed of your foil.

Sroka Company tutorial explaining how a Foil works

How to choose your foil according to your practice and level?

Each element of a foil can be selected and modified according to your needs.

To carve in Surf Foil, an L finow Aspect will spin very fast, but will be slower and less efficient than a Medium Aspect. Indeed, the latter will offer you the advantages of a fast foil, while having a lot of tolerance and forgiving of all mistakes. As for the High Aspect models, these can be interesting because they are more efficient at pumping.

Fins:

  • If you are looking for accessibility, a Mid or Low Aspect model such as the S Foil Classic SROKA will be ideal for surf-foiling with versatility, stability and carving with ease, for all levels. This type of carving model allows you to make beautiful curves with the pumping technique.
  • If you’re looking for performance, the High Aspect model will give you a better glide, with the same carving if you reduce the length of the fuselage. Pumping is easy and allows you to reconnect the waves without difficulty. However, it requires a little more technique.

Choosing your front foil fin

As far as the stabilizer is concerned, the S-Foil is one of the best compromises between maneuverability and stability. We are working on a larger range, in order to make the Foil more playful and to increase the possibilities of sailing. (Available in 2021)

Would you like to learn more about the differences between a High Aspect and Low Aspect foil? Head to our article “What to choose between a Low Aspect and High Aspect Foil?“.

How to surf foil and how does a foil work?

The mast:

The smaller your mast , the easier it will be to get started. Nevertheless, a longer mast will be more scalable over time.

  • A 70cm mast is ideal for learning to foil. Its relatively short size will forgive all your positioning mistakes, and falls will be much less impressive.
  • An 80cm mast is extremely versatile. It will allow you to evolve, pump, surf, and maneuver more efficiently.
  • A 90cm mast is aimed at the most experienced sailors looking for more technical and intense sailing. (this size is recommended for Downwinders)

How to choose your Foil Surfboard?

There are Surf-Foil boards on the market of different sizes (from the 4’2 to the 5′). The bigger the size of your board, the easier it will be to paddle and go surffoil, but will make pumping more complicated (because there is more inertia).

At SROKA Company, we have developed a Foil Surfboard in 4’6 size which is the size for us goes everywhere. Indeed, it will be perfect for beginners but will also allow experienced riders to fly and pump easily. With a rounded nose, and a compact overall volume under the body when rowing, it is the perfect compromise to learn, progress and perform in all conditions. The deck of the board is slightly hollowed out to lower the center of gravity and increase your stability. In addition, it gives a perfect reference point for the positioning of the feet. In order to multiply the gliding speed and set off on waves that have not yet broken, the hull is designed with a double concave towards the front and a thin nose to facilitate the duck. The entire deck of the board is lined with pads for comfort and durability. In addition, our Fast Flyer 4’6 is multi-support, you can use it in WingFoil, Kitefoil and Wakefoil.

For 2021, we are going to offer you a 4’2 Surf-Foiling board for experienced surfers. It is imagined and designed to be more manoeuvrable and easier to pump. Its performance will make it more technical to use to catch waves, as it requires better placement on the wave. It will be like its big sister, multi-support.

We have put the best of French know-how at your service. Our boards are made in Brittany and tested by Bruno Sroka, founder of the brand, and his team. This technique of producing surf-oil boardsis more expensive but guarantees incomparable quality and durability.

comment faire du surf foil ?

The choice of foil according to the spot and the conditions

Pay attention to your choice of spot. Indeed, it will vary according to your foil. It is imperative to provide a safety margin with the bottom under the foil.

Check with the locals or analyze the body of water carefully. Waves that break very close to the shore will be more difficult to get up and out quickly. Waves away from the shore will be simpler and will allow you to optimize the surf time. Deprogram the way you think about your spot like in surfing. You don’t need a wave that breaks, you don’t need a big wave, look for all the waves that no one wants (soft, that break and reform, a ripple…).

The spot doesn’t need to have big wave conditions. This is the advantage of Surf-Foil: you can stand up on a wave with a gentle slope and less than 60 cm high. Depending on the spot, you can (if your technique allows it) to leave directly from the beach, and reach the peak with the pumping technique from the beach.

In any case, a spot that can be frequented will be the best option.

Le Foil High Aspect Sroka Company

In short…

Choosing the right Surf-Foil pack will determine the way you foil. Our advice is therefore to take into account:

  • The choice of foil: a classic front fin like on our S-Foil will be perfect for beginners or if you are looking for forgiveness and easy carving. Opt for a High Aspect foil if you are an experienced surf-foiler, if you are looking for performance and to reconnect the waves without difficulty while maximizing speed.
  • The choice of mast: The smaller your mast is (70 cm), the easier it will be to get started. The ideal is to turn to a standard model (80 cm), which will be more scalable as you progress.
  • The choice of fuselage: astandard fuselage will require fewer frequencies from the pumping. On the other hand, a short fuselage will require more frequency but will rotate better. The standard Sroka size of our fuselages is 680 mm.
  • Choosing Your Board: A 4’6 Size Board Is Perfect for beginners while remaining versatile for experienced people who want to pump easily. A 4’2 size board will offer plenty of maneuverability for experienced surfers.

]]>
New Ultra Light Wind and Down Wind board, the DW from Sroka.
Or the board that will make you forget the nickname of tea bag, which has all too often been associated with Wing foil practitioners.
Here, you will discover how to take off with less than 10 knots of wind and discover the downwinder.

A wingfoil board for ultra light wind?

Downwind, like Ultra light wind, are practices that require equipment that can sometimes be specific. The new Sroka DW will allow you to optimize the low range in Light Wind, and take off very early in Downwind.

The type of board for Down Wind and Ultra Light Wingfoil or sup foil.

Starting early comes down to opting for a long, straight board. Indeed, the wider the board will be. The more drag it generates in the water and therefore will slow you down during the take-off phases. Opting for a narrow and long board allows you to reduce drag and therefore accelerate with little wind or few waves in the case of Down Wind.

But why is that?

The drag in the water due to its viscosity greater than air and its density is 800 times greater than in air, it is proportional to the frontal contact surface of the board, so in fact, a wide board will have a wider frontal surface and therefore a greater drag, the length it allows to limit turbulence when sliding the board in the water.
La gamme Elite Downwind

What is the difference between LW and DW?

The LW: this board is dedicated to Light Wind in Wing foil specifically and in general to a versatile Wingfoil, it will allow you to do everything in all conditions from five to 35 knots depending on the size.
The DW: This will allow you to glide in as little wind as possible as part of the Lighwind, but above all will allow you to be placed on a rail to allow you to take off in the slightest little bump during your Downwind practice. It will therefore be by definition less versatile, less easy, but will allow you to get your Light Wind and Downwind performances to the fullest.
The DW is currently divided into two models:

  • The 7’2 Qui will offer you thanks to its 110 l and 20 inches wide, an exceptional glide, and consequently a higher level of performance.
  • The generous 7’2W Plus with its 22 inches wide and 130 l will give access to the Down Wind to the heaviest size, but also to the Light Wind to these same sizes by limiting the difficulty.

It is important to note that each board in Sroka’s elite range includes a ring edge of exceptional quality, which will allow you to carry your new toy, without any risk.

How to take off efficiently and in the least wind possible with a Downwind board?

These boards are made to glide on the water, this is their most crucial advantage that you should use when practicing Ultra Light Wind. It is therefore important to use this ability to take advantage of it.
Let’s take an example, an 88 kg jig with the DW 7 ́2 with a 1350 foil and a 7 m² Wing can take off at five knots of wind if he applies the following method.
Once standing on the board, pump with the Wing, only so that the board slides on the surface of the water. Once you’ve picked up speed, simultaneously pump three or four big times with the Bouygues, and at the same time pump with the Foil so that you can come and perch at the top of the Foil, that’s it, you just have to slide and enjoy your session.
This method allows a gauge of 88 kg to take off in five knots with the equipment mentioned above. You no longer have any excuses in the lake or in the summer at the ocean. Small and larger people will now have a Light Wind wingfoil practice, as well as stronger winds in the image of its brothers and sisters Kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Sroka’s new DW (Down Wind) board is designed for Wingfoil and Sup Foil in light wind conditions and for downwind descents. It optimises performance in light winds and allows you to take off quickly during downwind descents. The DW is less versatile than the LW (Ultra Light Wind), but offers maximum performance in light winds and downwind. It is available in two models and allows you to take off efficiently thanks to its ability to glide on water. It offers new possibilities for wingfoil riders in light wind and downwind conditions.

Are you looking for a fun and exciting activity to improve your fitness while connecting with nature? Then paddle boarding is for you.

A booming water activity, paddle boarding has its origins in the Pacific islands. It is also the water sport to be practiced in summer by the sea or on the lakes. But what’s the point of paddle boarding? Why is there so much interest in this activity? Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, discover in this article all the physical and mental benefits that paddle boarding can offer.

The physical benefits of paddle boarding

A complete sport par excellence, paddle boarding on a regular basis allows you to maintain your physical fitness by soliciting several parts of your body while improving your health and balance.

Why Paddle Boarding

Cardiovascular training

Paddle boarding is an effective cardiovascular exercise to work on physical fitness. The paddling movements are continuous and use the heart and lungs to provide the necessary oxygen to the working muscles. Regular practice of this snow sport can help improve blood circulation, reduce blood pressure, and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. If you can’t run anymore because of the joints, paddle boarding can become a good alternative.

Improved balance and coordination

Maintaining balance on an unstable board while rowing is the very concept of paddle boarding. This requirement requires the body to use the deep core muscles to stabilize the body and maintain position. This regular solicitation improves balance and coordination, but also proprioception, i.e. the ability to feel and control the body’s movements.

Arm and trunk muscle development

Paddle boarding involves many muscle groups. The muscles of the arms, shoulders and back are particularly stressed when rowing. Nevertheless, those in the lower back and abdominals are also used to maintain a stable posture on the board. The leg muscles work and help maintain balance on the board.

All of these repetitive movements strengthen and tone the muscles, which can help improve posture and reduce back and shoulder pain.

How many calories do you burn when paddle boarding

Calorie Burning

Paddle boarding is also a great way to burn calories and promote healthy weight loss. Indeed, paddling requires a significant energy expenditure, especially if you paddle at a steady pace. The more you paddle, the more your muscles are used and the more your energy consumption increases.

According to Supconnect, a person can burn around 300 to 1000 calories per hour during a paddle session. This number varies depending on several factors, including the type of paddle surfing, weight, muscle mass, intensity of the session, and weather conditions. For example, a warm, sunny day can increase your metabolism and calorie burn.

Other hybrid disciplines such as SUP Yoga or SUP Fitness also offer a great opportunity to prepare physically all year round.

The Mental Benefits of Paddle Boarding

In addition to the physical benefits of SUP, it can also help improve your mental health. Breathing in the fresh air, enjoying a moment of relaxation or discovering new landscapes are all ways to feel a sense of freedom and well-being.

Paddle boarding in the lake The rules

Relaxation and relaxation

The smooth, smooth movement of the board on the water, the soothing sound of chop, as well as the feeling of cool water around the body all help to create a peaceful and relaxing ambience. This atmosphere can help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as improve sleep quality.

Contact with nature

Practicing in the sea, lake or river offers a golden opportunity to discover magnificent natural landscapes, observe the local fauna and flora, and breathe the pure air of nature. This connection helps improve mood and overall mental health.

Opportunity to disconnect from the modern world

Paddle boarding requires increased concentration on the movement of the board, on paddling and the coordination of movements. This allows you to focus on the present moment, eliminating mental distractions, such as stressful or anxious thoughts. In nature, far from the noise of the city, it is the perfect opportunity to cut yourself off from everyday life and immerse yourself in an idyllic natural setting, while having fun.

See all paddle boards

In short, SUP is a sport that combines fun and physical well-being. It’s a more fun alternative to walking and more challenging than indoor fitness sessions. By paddling, you can fully enjoy the natural elements such as the fresh air, the calm of the river and the blue of the sea, while having fun with your friends, alone or with your family. This will strengthen both your physical and mental well-being, without feeling the effort you are making.

A carbon foil performs better than an aluminum foil if and only if the carbon mast is well designed. In this article we will guide you and give you different levels of analysis to understand the real differences between a foil with an aluminum and carbon mast. You’ll find that performance varies from case to case: sometimes it’s similar, sometimes it’s very contrasting.

“It’s not enough to have the carbon designation to have a faster foil compared to an aluminium foil.”

Carbon foil and aluminium foil, what are the differences?

Criterion Foil Aluminium Foil Carbon Foil
Price Cheaper More Expensive
Resistance Stronger and not afraid of shocks Doesn’t like shocks
Ease of use Easy to assemble and adjust Faster therefore finer adjustment.
Scalability Modular according to desires and conditions Also modular but each room costs more
Durability Robust but susceptible to corrosion, 100% recyclableDurable and resistant if well maintained but sensitive to impact, non-recyclable.
Weight 4.7 kg 3.5 kg
Maintenance Needs to be dismantled and rinsed as often as possible Does not require any special maintenance (check from time to time of all parts)

First of all, let’s look at the characteristics of aluminum foils:

  • Price : An aluminum foil costs less because it is mass-produced. The mast and fuselage are made of aluminium and the fins are made of fibre or carbon.
  • Resistance : Aluminum foils are sturdy and can withstand shocks. A poised aluminium mast remains usable.
  • Easy to use : Generally, aluminum foils are easier to use because they are more suitable with large fins for beginners.
  • Scalable : You can easily change the length of the mast and fuselage at a lower cost depending on the program you want to do.
  • Combined with small fins, they can be very efficient and sometimes even faster than some carbon foils.
  • Durability : an aluminium foil can be recycled perfectly (all parts made of aluminium)

1350 Full Foil Lift

On the other hand

  • It requires a little maintenance, you have to rinse it and disassemble them at each session (it takes 2 min)
  • It is generally heavier compared to a carbon foil.
  • Even though the mast is stiff, it is a little less responsive than a carbon mast.

Characteristics of carbon foils:

  • Price : a carbon foil can be more expensive or even much more expensive compared to an aluminum foil. An aluminium pole is produced on an assembly line and it is possible to produce many of them at a lower cost. A carbon mast is produced by hand, you can have up to 160 layers of carbon in a mast, which automatically leads to an explosion in manufacturing costs.
  • Stability : if the carbon foil is well designed, it will be stiffer and provide more stability at high speeds. In the event that the technical development of the mast is not done in an optimal way, no performance gain will be observed, it may even be less efficient, less rigid than a well-developed aluminum foil.
  • Performance : a carbon foil will perform better if and only if it is stiffer with less rope and less thickness, which reduces the drag generated by the mast and therefore increases performance.
  • Durability : a carbon foil requires more care because it is more fragile. It is not very resistant to shocks (even if any carbon part is repairable) but can last a long time if you protect it. However, it is not recyclable, so choose it wisely.

As we have seen, an aluminium foil has advantages and disadvantages like the carbon foil, however

Is an aluminium foil really less efficient than a carbon foil?

We will really explain to you why this is not always true, and in case you opt for a carbon foil, do your research so as not to be disappointed.
Let’s start with some assumptions so that everyone can understand our thinking.
First of all, we will imagine that we are using the same aircraft (front winglet, rear wing and fuselage) We will focus on the mast because it generates a lot of drag due to its length, thickness, profile and chord.

There is 800 times more drag in water than in air. Therefore, the more contact surface there is, the greater the drag

The contact surface is defined by the thickness of the mast, its chord, its profile, its length.

Like what:

  • If two masts are identical except for the construction (one in carbon and the other in aluminum): the performance will be the same because the drag will be identical.
  • If a carbon mast has more chord (distance between the leading board and trailing edge) than an aluminium mast with the same profile, the same size and the same thickness: it will go slower than an aluminium mast because + equal rope + drag.
  • A carbon mast with a slower profile (with more thickness close to the driving board, and there are infinitely many) will go slower than an aluminum mast with the same characteristics (chord, thickness, height) but with a faster and more efficient profile.
  • A less rigid carbon mast (in torsion and bending) will be less stable and therefore potentially slower than a steeper aluminium mast. In this example, it is quite possible that an aluminum mast is stiffer than a carbon mast, especially if the carbon used is standard (not of good quality).

SROKA carbon foils

In summary, to claim that a carbon mast is faster than an aluminium mast is totally false because there are a lot of parameters that influence the rigidity and performance of a mast. Test and observe carbon foils yourself before buying one.

So how can a carbon mast, and therefore a carbon foil, be more efficient?

To be more efficient, you have to be stiffer, thinner, have less string and have a more efficient and efficient profile.

How is that possible?

To go fast, you have to reduce the rope of the mast (on the submerged part). Our aluminum mast has a 121mm cord, our carbon pole has a 108mm cord. So there is a decrease of more than 10% in the rope and also a 10% decrease in the drag related to the rope.

To go fast, you have to refine the mast as much as possible and therefore reduce its thickness. To give you an example, our aluminum mast is 18.5 mm and our carbon mast on the lower part (where there is the maximum drag) is less than 14 mm. In this example, we have reduced the thickness of the carbon mast by more than 25% and therefore we have reduced the drag of the mast by more than 25%.

The profile applied to a carbon mast should be the most slippery and fastest. Our profile used on our carbon mast reduces drag by 10% compared to our aluminium mast.

Finally, the mast should be the most rigid in torsion and bending. This is the most complicated part because to be rigid you have to:

  1. A perfectly designed draping plane to reduce twisting and bending. (And it’s not that easy to do, some brands can’t do it.) A mast with too much twist will not be able to be used with large wings such as a 1.40 m wing. It won’t handle lateral effort and will lead to parasitic movements and uncontrolled movements that will make your navigation uncontrollable at times.
  2. Increase the amount of carbon to maximize stiffness. At SROKA, our carbon mast is a mast with more than 140 layers of carbon. In the lower part, the mast is completely full. There is no foam, which optimizes stiffness and torsion.
  3. High-modulus carbon fibers. As a result of all these surface area reductions to reduce drag, our mast is made of 100% high modulus M40 J fibers that guarantee lower elasticity and better rigidity. Most of the time this type of carbon is used in F1, aerospace or aviation. However, it should be noted that this carbon costs much more and therefore increases the overall cost of a mast. A high-performance carbon mast is therefore a mast that will be expensive. Few foil brands make 100% carbon masts with high modulus fibers.

In short

In summary, for a carbon mast to be more efficient and allow you to go faster, you need to reduce its thickness, its chord, have a fast profile, increase the amount of carbon in the mast (because by reducing the chord and the thickness, the mast becomes more flexible) and finally use high modulus fibers to optimize the rigidity to have a reactive and fast foil.

In this case and only in this case, a carbon foil is faster than an aluminum foil.

“It’s not enough to have the carbon designation to have a faster foil compared to an aluminium foil.”

At SROKA we really want to push the limits of carbon foil and create a real difference compared to the aluminium mast.

So we offer you a 100% carbon mast with high modulus fibers, thin and steeper than our aluminum mast which is already a reference.

Increase your performance by opting for our Elite HA 14mm carbon mast. You will gain more than 25% more performance compared to a SROKA aluminum foil and almost 40% more performance compared to other foils of the competition.

Hadrien Brunner is a youtuber known for the quality of his wing foil tests and reviews. In this new video, he reviews the entire range of Sroka wing foils and gives you his opinion as an experienced foiler.

“I like this approach that says that whatever the size and level, you will find the right shoe for you, with a starting chassis that is rigid, robust and reliable”

https://youtu.be/ABlY-fF6hcU

To carry out this test, Hadrien Brunner foiled in a variety of conditions in order to put the equipment to the test on different practices. Waves for surf foil, wind swell, chop and downwind for wingfoil. And finally, a dockstart session to compare the different fins and stabilizers as well as possible.
This test does not include Sroka wing wings which are being tested a second time.

Hadrien’s opinion on the WINGFOIL Sroka equipment

Best Wing Foil Board

S-Foil 950 High Aspect Speed

For Hadrien Brunner, the S-Foil 950 HA Speed makes performance more accessible. His opinion is that with this Sroka fin, it is possible to achieve high performance even without having an advanced level of foiling. The 950 Speed is, for Hadrian, a wing with a more liberated feeling, with a good glide, which is faster, more manoeuvrable and more responsive in manoeuvres.

“We have a high aspect with performance, but we also really focus on accessibility”

950 HA Speed

S-Foil 1190 High Aspect Speed

What first surprised Hadrien Brunner was the ultra-fast take-off of the foil, both in wing foil and surf foil. The 1190 High Aspect Speed fin has a good glide and is “very easy to pump” (in wingfoil and surf foil) thanks to good support. According to his test, foiling doesn’t require you to have a front leg that is too anchored in the board. Having a fairly free front leg turns out to be nice for changing direction and carving.
The Lift is perfect for surfing, it has more lift, so it’s easier for taller riders.

1190 HA Speed

Classic S-Foil 1250

S-Foil Sroka size 1250 (M)

Hadrien Brunner also tested the S-Foil Classique 1250 in Wing Foil. His opinion? With the 1250 winglet, take-off is anticipated, you leave even earlier than with the 1190 HA winglet. For him, the 1250 is more stable, more manoeuvrable and keeps a good speed. However, with this winglet, he finds that the glide of flight is less (What is glide of flight?).

“On the classic S-Foils you are stuck, you keep this longitudinal stability, even in big conditions”.

Classic S-Foil

Fast Flyer 4’6

Board for surf foil and wingsurf foil sold by Sroka Company

For Hadrien, the ratio is very slender and the width is well in the center of the board, he finds that it has a very good balance at the waterstart. In addition, “the board is relatively light, so with the foil we had a good glide, a good ability to pump”. Hadrien Brunner also liked the 4’6 pads: “This big pad is great because you have grip everywhere”.

Fast Flyer

Sroka Air: the inflatable wing foil board

Sroka wingfoil board reviews

Hadrien Brunner is not in the habit of regularly sailing on inflatable wing foil boards. However, his opinion of the Sroka Air is positive. Although it starts a little later than a rigid board according to him, the inflatable has two big advantages: solidity and practicality. Indeed, as he says, it is a compact board that is easy to carry to the beach.

“I had fun, I had a blast”

He sees the inflatable wing foil board as a great family tool, very practical for traveling and offering great sensations. For him, the inflatable has this reassuring side in case of a fall, especially for children. With an inflatable board you can’t hurt yourself. In addition, it was very easy for him to transport the Sroka Air. It doesn’t take up space, doesn’t fear shocks and it could even be used to protect his rigid foil boards. In a Sroka board cover, it is possible to store three sails, a foil and a board.

SROKA AIR Inflatable Wing Foil Board

Hadrien’s opinion on the SURF FOIL Sroka equipment

Foil and wing foil surfboard for performance

1190 High Aspect Speed

The best of high-aspect foil for wing and surf foil

  • Very free in curves
  • Nice to reconnect the waves
  • “The front wing is efficient, we generate speed when pumping, we are comfortable when we have to do a short shift to turn around on the wave and reconnect”

1190 Speed

1190 High Aspect Lift

The Hight Aspect high-performance foil for surf foil sold by Sroka Company at the best price

  • Thicker profile than the 1190 High Aspect Speed
  • More lift than the Speed, even at low speeds
  • “What’s going to be interesting is that if you’re not an expert, this wing is still good but it’s going to be more forgiving”

1190 Lift

1750 Classic

The perfect foil to start wing foiling. This foil is very scalable. It is sold by Sroka Company

  • Very high lift at low speeds
  • Interesting in changes of direction due to its compact profile
  • High roll tolerance: ideal for making up for pilot errors
  • Perfect for foil beginners

1750 Classic

Hadrien Brunner’s advice for choosing your wing foil board

You shouldn’t want to go for a small board at all costs. “The day the wind drops and you have wind off, a bit messed up gusts, you can quickly find yourself in trouble and not enjoy your session. Whereas with a suitable board, you will stand out from the crowd and have fun throughout the session”. For example, if you are a beginner and you are hesitating between the Sky Rider 4’8 and the Sky Rider 5’2, it is preferable to go with the 5’2 (be careful that the board is adapted to your size). This way, you can have fun even when the conditions are not good.

Video Presentation

Planche pour la pratique du foil taille 5'2

Bruno Sroka (3x Kite World Champion) is the creator and manager of the SROKA brand. He has worked for nearly 15 years of developing boards kite race in the kite industry. In this video, he explains everything about the different construction methods and introduces you to the Sky Rider news.
Once you’ve seen this video, you’ll understand why we strive to always prioritize the highest quality possible. At SROKA, all our boards are made of full sandwich PVC carbon or fiberglass. This is the best build on the market right now. This is obviously the case with the two new Sky Rider 4’8 and 5’2.

The new Sky Rider: 4’8 and 5’2

To support you in your evolution, we have developed two new small boards. These are the Sky Rider 4’8 and 5’2.
We noticed that the general level of Wing Foil riders was constantly increasing. That’s why we want to offer you the right equipment to take it to the next level. With a volume of less than 90 liters, the Sky Rider 4’8 and 5’2 gives you access to new possibilities.
The worked shape of these new wing boards will bring you stability and responsiveness. The boards are shorter, they are perfect for jumping, gaining speed and having more maneuverability.
They are ideal for freestyle, races, or even to have fun in the waves.

Would you like to know more about the characteristics of these two new Wing Foil boards? You’ve come to the right place. Click on the video above (or HERE) and they will no longer hold any secrets for you.

How do you choose between the two?

  • The Sky Rider 4’8 is the perfect Wing Foil board for light weights (under 75Kg). Compact, it is therefore very responsive and manoeuvrable. It’s the perfect board for freestyle and wave surfing. It’s also a great race board on flat water.
  • With the same advantages, the Sky Rider 5’2 is the all-rounder board for intermediate/advanced foilers with a build of more than 80 kg. The 5’2 will allow you to start very early thanks to an excellent glide propelled by the double concave at the front (throttle from start to schedule).

As you can see, the choice between the Sky Rider 4’8 and the Sky Rider 5’2 will depend mainly on your size. It is still possible for a size of more than 80 kg to use the Sky Rider 4’8, but it will require a wind power of at least 14 knots to exploit its potential.

Planche pour la pratique du surf foil et du wingsurf foil vendue par Sroka Company

If you’re looking for an even smaller board, the Fast Flyer 4’6 is sure to satisfy you. It is the perfect board for surf foil and wing foil in the waves or for those who want to do 100% freestyle.

The latest edition of Foiling Magazine, THE foiling magazine by reference, is out! And once again, SROKA is in Foiling Magazine. In this new edition, Foiling Magazine has published our test session of the High Aspect S-Foil and pocket board in Annecy. The opportunity for us to share, in the “Red Day Letter”, our Wake Foil weekend on Lake Annecy with the whole SROKA team.

Foiling magazine is Foil’s number one international magazine. Available in digital and paper versions, in this magazine we talk about Foil and all the associated practices ( Surf Foil, Wake Foil, SUP Foil, …). Foiling magazine shares stories of unpublished sessions and interviews with athletes in the middle of photos that take us on a journey. It is a very comprehensive book. In addition, there are tests of specialised branded products. Readers of Foiling Magazine can discover innovative products, get inspiration for their next sessions or find advice on how to progress.

Our test session on Lake Annecy with Emmanuelle’s boat

wake foil sur le lac d'Annecy

It was in September 2021 that we went to test new products for the Wake Foil. We were with our riders, Paul-Conrad Delaere and Gabriel Bachelet, both accompanied by Bruno SROKA. They made a series of waves under the lens of Jean-Marc Favre. Jean-Marc Favre is the photographer who has followed Bruno throughout the last 20 years. Especially during his adventure project: crossing Cape Horn in a kite. It must be said that Lake Annecy offers a unique spectacle. The sun rising behind the mountains provides a contrast of vibrant colors. It was therefore unthinkable for us to be there without immortalizing our sessions. For these sessions we boarded Emmanuelle Dumolard’s boat, which offers water sports lessons on Lake Annecy.

Annecy is the ideal autumn or spring destination. It combines pleasures: skiing in the morning and wake foiling in the afternoon, before ending the day with a good mountain meal. We were also able to try the famous Waves Garden in the Swiss Alps, Alaïa Bay. Only 1h30 from Annecy, it is the first surfing pool in continental Europe. A great spot that allows you to surf as many waves as possible right at the foot of magnificent mountains.

This trip allowed us to evaluate the performance of the new S-Foil High Aspect 1190 Lift in waves and pumping. It was also an opportunity for us to test our new SROKA pocket board. These are new development ideas for the 2022 season, always with the objective of combining the high performance of our products with accessibility.

Wake Foil is a very good way to improve your technique, especially for surf foiling. Towed by the boat at the start, you will generate speed very quickly and thus take off easily. A 20-minute wake foil session is the equivalent of at least 2 sessions in the waves!
From a product development and testing perspective, it’s really interesting. You have time to observe and understand the behaviour of your foil under your feet. But also to work on your technique in order to progress and better feel your foil and its potential. All without having to worry about wind, swell or tidal conditions…

SURF Foil

THE ADVANTAGE OF WAKE FOIL FOR PRODUCT TESTING

Riding a wave that never ends is so exhilarating. You can vary the sensations, make sharp turns, get away from the wake, go around the water and then come back on the wave. We don’t care about the waves because behind a good wake foil boat, they are the same all the time. Depending on their position on the wave, the rider will not have the same power and different characteristics of glide, handling or power may be observed.

The big difference between a boat’s wave and a wave formed by a swell is the boat’s ability to create, over and over again, the same wave identically. This has allowed us to to easily test different setting options with a minimum of variables external to the product and thus validate our foils more quickly. Every second, the wave is identical. This is exactly what you are looking for when you want to test different profiles, different wing options, etc. It’s also a great way to progress.

RESULTS OF OUR TESTS

Paul and Gab got off to a very fast start thanks to the lift and glide of the 1190 Lift HA front wing. They shared the waves without any problems, with big carvings, many jumps and backflips.
The ultra-short fuselage offers a huge gain in maneuverability, which makes it easier to chain more and more radical maneuvers on a short wave. The foil is very manoeuvrable, it turns much more and faster. Just like the mast of the SROKA foil, the foil is made of high-quality aluminum. This makes it very rigid and gives it a long service life. We have combined this with our new small 240cm2 stabilizer, which makes the foil even more lively and maneuverable.
Behind the boat, the HA 1190 Lift front wing finds a new life and shows us its full potential. This fin is designed for super efficient pumping. It turned out to be great for starting in dock start on the many pontoons of the lake.
For experienced foilers, there is no comparison! It is the ideal weapon for surfing, foiling or wake foiling.

Want to see what Foiling Magazine thinks of our S-Foil HA 1190 Speed and Lift? Click here to see their reviews and test results.

And concretely?

As we mentioned, the advantage of testing the products on a wake wave is the regularity of the wave. This makes it possible to Test all options under the same conditions, without any external parameters disturbing the test.

  • Step 1: At first, riders need to get used to the wave to get to grips with this new way of surfing. The wave is shorter, so you have to adapt your surfing style. Compared to a natural ocean wave, you have to press slightly more on the back foot. Once this adjustment period is over, we start to change one variable at a time. After each modification, riders review how they felt, then compare each other’s opinions in order to choose the best possible option.
  • Step 2: The objective: to test the different possible options. We started by changing the size of the fuselage, then the length of the mast, and finally we tested different stabilizers. Every time we changed an element, we tried to get an agreement on how everyone felt. If it wasn’t the case, we went back in the water to check and compare our feelings again.
It’s a long and meticulous job, but it’s the best way to produce a perfectly finished product that meets all the objectives we had set ourselves. It is for this reason that it is useless to produce 50 different fins without having done a lot of work beforehand to set a complete set of specifications and precise objectives.
  • Step 3: Obviously, we end up with validation. This type of test weekend is fundamental to validate the production of a new fin. We were able to adjust the foil perfectly and thus determine which was the most suitable combo for wake foil, according to the different riders.

During these two days, we tested four different wing sizes, but also three sizes of mast and fuselage as well as two stabilizers. A productive day that promises new things to come!

In short

To wake foil, you have two options:

  1. For experienced riders : We recommend choosing the High Aspect foils in 1190 Lift, with ultra-short fuselage and 80cm mast. It’s the perfect combo for carving radically on the wave, all with a very good glide.
  2. For beginners : It is better to go for a 1250 or 1500 foil with a short fuselage. The idea is to have a foil that is easier to handle. It will glide a little less but it will be more suitable if you want to start and carve without worries.

In the near future, we will be releasing a High Aspect 1350 Lift fin. It will allow all those who do not have the opportunity to have a wave like that of a Wakefoiler and Surfoiler boat as they like with an absolute glide.

As the images are always more telling, discover our weekend in Annecy in video!

Video Presentation

This stay allowed us to enjoy Lake Annecy from sunrise to sunset. The best way for us to close 2021 and start the 2022 season. Our only regret? that this spot doesn’t get any closer to home!

A big thank you to Emmanuelle Dumolard for renting her boat as well as to Jean-Marc Favre for his superb shots.

On the occasion of the Wing Foil Promo Tour 2021, our team went to the lake of Soustons on Sunday, November 7, 2021. For this new edition, the Soustons Marensin Sailing Club welcomed many brands of wing foil, to present and test our products.

pumping rapide foil

SROKA COMPANY
THE OCEAN IS OUR PASSION, OUR LIFE!

K-FOIL SROKA

WINNER OF THE CATEGORY: KITE FOIL FREERIDE PERFORMANCE

K-FOIL SROKA WINNER

The K-FOIL SROKA was named the big winner by the famous magazine “The KITE mag”. In the “ultimate test guide 2019” edition of The KITE mag magazine, the foil has been tested and approved by the team.

The comments ensuring the perfection of the product: “a surprise foil that the test team was very impressed with. Very wide range of use, excellent top speed, and perfectly balanced set-up. Foil is fun and rewarding.”

Their full commentary can be found below in screenshot: “The SROKA carbon K-Foil is a top-of-the-range product from SROKA, but at a competitive price. This is the third version of the foil, which benefits from significant changes compared to the previous version. The focus is on reducing drag and increasing efficiency. The curvatures of the front fins reflect the direction the foil design seems to be taking in terms of improving carving and stability. In addition, for the latest version, the stabilizer has been redesigned to improve lateral stability. The K-FOIL SROKA has a carbon mast and carbon wings with an aluminum fuselage. Overall, the build quality of this foil is excellent and the test team felt that it was probably the best built and developed ‘average price’ during the trial. The pocket board offers a good compromise between high-volume and low-volume boards, with enough float to get you up and off easily if you’re riding strapless, but it’s still light and stiff underfoot, providing a strong and comfortable platform for cruising. It was the only board like that we had on the test and we agreed it was well designed. The K-Foil easily rises to about nine knots, but with a light pump, you can get it back up sooner. Immediately, it’s clear that this is a well-balanced foil. At low speeds, it is very stable and when you turn it on, it has a very smooth and responsive handling. For intermediate testers, this was one of their favorites because it was predictable and really confidence-building. For more advanced riders, it provided plenty of performance, high wind angles and a forgiving ride that really allowed them to push it without fear of being thrown off their feet.”

The SurfShop.fr shop tested the SROKA – K FOIL kitefoil

This carbon foil by Sroka promises high performance on paper and you won’t be disappointed. Indeed, from its design to its construction, everything has been thought out to offer a high-performance synergy between each part (Sroka hydrofoil included). In addition to being quite easy to learn, it is probably one of the most scalable foils ever designed, which bodes well for 2018 and subsequent versions. A high-level rider will be able to have a lot of fun with this exceptional product while an intermediate rider will benefit from a rapid evolution.

To recap, this foil offers 4 great advantages which are also its 4 greatest qualities:

  • The quality/price ratio is the best on the market with a carbon mast,
  • The quick handling is felt from the first minutes,
  • Its scalable profile allows you to never get tired of it,
  • Its speed performance is exceptional.
